OMZ-Special steels completes production of a shell for nuclear reactor vessel for VVER-TOI project

OMZ-Special Steels, part of OMZ Group, completed production of a unique vessel shell for next-generation nuclear reactor core for the VVER-TOI project.

OMZ-Special Steels has been developing technologies for production of blanks for reactor vessels and other reactor equipment under VVER-TOI project (Atomenergoproekt, a subsidiary of Rosatom, is the General Designer of this project) together with OMZ-Izhora, NPO CNIITMASH, CRISM Drometey.

Six meter long experimental shell was manufactured from a 420-ton ingot at a 12000 ton-force automated forging unit. The shell then underwent initial heat treatment and milling. Main heat treatment and quality assurance procedure completed the production cycle.

Research of technologies involved in production of lengthened vessel shells for nuclear reactors of next generation has great importance not only for OMZ-Special Steels, but also for development nuclear technologies in Russia in general. Usage of lengthened shell in reactor core allows to make this zone seamless, which significantly increases its reliability and safety.

OMZ-Special Steels, a company based on metallurgical production of Izhorskiye Zavody, is the largest Russian manufacturer of metal blanks made from special steels. OMZ-Special Steels has many years of experience in manufacturing high-quality products for mechanical engineering.

OMZ Group is one of the leading heavy industry companies specializing in engineering, production, sales and service support of equipment for nuclear, oil and gas, mining industries, as well as special steel production and industrial services. OMZ Group’s facilities are located in Russia and Czech Republic. The Group is controlled by Gazprombank.
